ABOUT US

The planning and conducting of the Australia Day Regatta has been a voluntary effort by many prominent Sydney yachtsmen since its inception in 1837.  This continues today with the members of the Australia Day Regatta Inc Advisory Council and Management Committee giving dedicated service to the continuation of the world’s oldest continuous annual sailing regatta.

Over the years the Australia Day Regatta has had strong support from the Australia Day Council, the City of Sydney Council, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club and other clubs along with Maritime Authorities and the Australian Defence Forces.   The Royal Australian Navy provides the Flagship, the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Australian Army add colour to the day with spectacular fly-overs, parachute jumps and other activities.

The Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, is Patron of the Australia Day Regatta.  The President is the eminent yachtsman Sir James Hardy Kt OBE, a former America’s Cup, Admiral’s Cup, Olympic and World Champion sailor.   Members of the Advisory Council include senior Staff Officers of the Defence Forces, Commodores of leading yacht clubs and yachting authorities, the Australia Day Council, the Australian National Maritime Museum, a senior representative of the principal sponsors, the Commonwealth Bank of  Australia’s Private Bank, and individual supporters of the Regatta.
